Hi Guys,

This Saturday July 26 at 9:30-10:30AM the first make-up Exam will be given. The room is Schmitt hall C205. I will let everyone know tomorrow morning (in class) of any changes (as of 1:30PM today this is what I have been told). Please inform your fellow students, and be sure to tell them to look at the blog for further information.

Lastly, anyone considering the make-up should refer to the syllabus to understand what it means with respect to exemption and the Final Exam (a person who exercises the Make-Up Exam option must take the Final Exam).

Hi guys. Lecture slides have been updated, and the homework solutions for Chapter 3 (up to Section 3.5) have been posted.

Just a reminder, July 17 7:30AM is Hour Exam I (100 points and 50 minutes to complete). Each student must bring a blue book and a calculator. Leave your textbook home. Good luck!

Also, here is a a copy of the periodic table that will be passed out with each Exam. Please take a look and recall all the things discussed in class, and in your reading, about this beast.

Periodic Table.

Hi Guys,

Lecture slides have been uploaded and are up to date. Solutions to the assigned problems in Chapter 2 have also been posted.

I apologize for the mix-up on handing back students homework notebooks. I should have posted a notice indicating that Zos was going to grade and return them the on Friday. I forgot to do so and caused much confusion and inconvenience for many of you. My apologies for the blunder.

Just a reminder that our first hour (50 minutes actually) Exam 1 is July 17. On Exam day please bring with you a blue book and a calculator (I will have zero blue books with me). You will not need your textbook or a periodic table. The Exam will cover Chapters 1-3 up to and including Section 3.4 (including % yield but not “yields in multistep synthesis” or “green chem yield” that follow).

Please mail me if you have any questions over the weekend regarding the Exam or material. The Exam will be very similar to the old Exams posted in the Exams tab section of this blog. Download these and give yourself 50 minutes to complete them and you will get a very good feel what to expect next Thursday. The format will be 10 multiple choice, 3 short answer and 3 long answer (no bonus points).

Lecture slides, homework solutions for Chapter 1, and the assigned problems for Chapter 2 have been updated. Don’t be overwhelmed by the number of assigned problems in Chapter 2—many are easy short answer conceptual problems.

I won’t say this often but you should be done with all the reading and all the homework problems in Chapter 1 and into about 10 pages of Chapter 2. If you are having difficulty with the material at this point I urge to please come and see me during office hours after class.

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend. See you Tuesday.

Hi Everyone,

Slides from Lecture 1 have been posted. Moreover, there is pdf file of a concept map under the Tab “Maps” that hopefully ties together, and makes clear, the basic language and terms found in the Chapter.

Mr. Montes has provided the following day/time for the recitation periods. We still have no word on a room, however. Please stay tuned as we hope to have some information before Monday morning. There may be eight students who have a conflict with these new times. I will post the times of other recitation periods so that the affected students (not others) may attend another instructor’s session.

Mondays:10:30 - 11:30AM
Tuesdays: 9:00 - 10:00AM

If you have not done so already please buy the Silberberg book and a calculator, and read Chapter 1 and do the assigned problems. Email the requested information as well.

See you guys on Tuesday.

Hi guys.  My apologies for not being able to make it to our first class.   I am currently in San Antonio, Texas and will depart for Manila on Tuesday morning.  Your first assignment is a really easy one.

1.  Please download, read and understand the Chem 7 syllabus.  It can be viewed or downloaded by visiting the “Syllabus” tab at the top of the blog.

2.  Purchase the Silberberg textbook as described in the syllabus and a non-programmable calculator.

3.  Begin reading Chapter 1 and complete problems 1,4,6,7,18,21,22,27,30,34,38,52,56-60,65,66,70. (no not for next class period or even the following).

4.  Read the syllabus and prepare any questions you might have.

Don’t hesitate to leave a comment, quark, question or querry in the blog.  See you all Thursday.
